Music is an important part of worship.
Music is an important way to connect with the Divine. It is drawn from classical and contemporary sources, with an emphasis on “singability.” The church has a grand piano, electronic keyboard, and a recently install organ. The church choir sings almost every Sunday during the school year.
Beginning piano enthusiastically at the age of six, Ann Thiermann
later put herself through the Art Students' League of NYC by accompanyingboth ballet and opera. She studied piano and accompanying at Mills College with Madame Milhaud and Naomi Sparrow, and organ at UCLA with Thomas Harmond and later James Welch. She has been a practicing church musician since the 1970's. She is an avid chamber musician, participating on piano, organ, and virginal (harpsichord).
An experienced educator, Ann currently teaches drawing and painting at Cabrillo College and Monterey Community College. She holds with honors a BA in Art from UCSC, and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from CA State University, Long Beach. She has designed over sixty murals for natural history museums, art museums, libraries, and educational institutions, in both private and commercial settings. Hundreds of school children sit in front of her murals in State Park Centers throughout the Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz Counties. Both her landscape paintings and her natural history backdrops reflect a deep connection to the various ecosystems and concern for the preservation of our beloved planet. Bridging her background in both fields, she selects compositions that have a visual flow of form, light and line, akin to musical expression.
The Choir enhances worship most Sundays between September and June. Rehearsal is on Thursday evenings. Not only does the choir sing wonderful music - people also have a lot of fun together!
Participants do not have to be able to read music.
Periodically throughout the year we are fortunate enough to have several guest musicians and groups share their amazing gifts with us during worship.
